She was facing up to 30 years in prison, but a Florida woman received a
prison sentence of 24 years for
driving drunk and killing two women in a wrong-way collision. Part of her sentence also
included a permanent license revocation, meaning that even after she has
served her time, she will not be allowed to drive ever again.
The woman drove the wrong way on the westbound lane of the Sawgrass Expressway
in Coral Springs. She was estimated to have been traveling between 84
and 96 mph. She crashed into another car head on, killing the two 21-year
old victims inside. The woman, who was under the legal drinking age at
the time, was found to have a blood alcohol content of almost double the
legal limit. She was also found to have marijuana in her system. Prior
to the collision, the woman had tweeted, “2 Drunk 2 Care.”
She said the message was for her boyfriend, and claims she cannot remember
driving or the car accident that occurred that evening.
The woman pleaded guilty to two counts of
DUI manslaughter. From her wheelchair, she cried and apologized to the family members of
the two women who died. She said, “It breaks my heart to know that
I’ve broken your hearts. It’s my fault. One mistake changed
all of our lives, one stupid mistake, and I’m sorry.”
