A nice post from Las Vegas, on the pros and cons of googling up
DIY divorce forms. How can that go wrong? (You don’t want to find out.)
The post says that Google reports:
- 72 million searches for “do it yourself divorce”
- 20 million searches for “do it yourself tax returns”
- 11 million searches for “do it yourself bankruptcy”
Nobody will deny that TurboTax changed the world of tax preparation. Millions
do their own taxes now, and do it well. Plumbing can be depicted in diagrams,
and carried out by following steps, and by frequent consulting runs to
the local plumbing supply store. But divorce is wildly complex in comparison.
If you go the DIY route, you are likely to find that your situation is
not covered by the forms. The last thing you want is to be dealing with
lingering divorce issues years later, due to taking the DIY approach.
“…there is more than simple trust involved. Attorneys and
accountants put their license to practice at stake when they advise you
on a legal or financial matter. Do it yourself kit purveyors accept no
responsibility for the negative consequences that might accrue from your
use of their services.”
Be smart. The starting point for divorce is speaking with a competent,
experienced attorney, not searching on Google.
