Helping Your Guests Avoid a DUI After a Party

Posted By Stepniak & Park || 26-Oct-2017

With the arrival of Halloween, the holiday season is just around the corner once again. Many Americans will be celebrating the fall and winter months surrounded by friends and family, food, holiday cheer, and alcoholic beverages.

Unfortunately, drunk driving fatalities increase significantly during this time of year, beginning with the night before Thanksgiving and ending with New Year’s Day. Because of this, there is an increase in law enforcement officers patrolling the streets and DUI checkpoints set up to deter people from intoxicated driving.

If you plan on hosting a party during the holidays, one of your goals is to help prevent your guests from getting arrested for a DUI once they leave the event.

The following are several tips to help your guests avoid drunk driving:

  • Coordinate riding situations – If any of your guests plan on drinking during the party, they can request a ride from a ridesharing app—such as Uber or Lyft—to pick them up and take them back home once the party is over. You can also assign designated drivers to make sure your intoxicated guests get home safe.
  • Allow them to sleep over – If they are worried about leaving their vehicle behind or refuse to use a ridesharing service, let them spend the night at your place to avoid a DUI.
  • Serve plenty of food – Food and the holiday season go hand-in-hand. Eating plenty of food will help you absorb alcohol.
  • Pay attention to how much each of your guests drink – Part of being a responsible host is knowing when your guests are drunk and cutting them off. If you would rather enjoy your party than be mindful of your guests’ drinking limits, hire a bartender to manage how much each guest consumes.
  • Cut off the alcohol – Before the party concludes, shut down the alcohol supply. Give your guests a few hours to sober up first before they leave.

If you have been arrested for a DUI in Florida, schedule a free consultation with our Daytona Beach criminal defense lawyers at Law Offices of Robert Stepniak today.
