What started off as a joke event has become a viral meme sensation that
has caught the attention of the U.S. military.
More than 1.5 million people have RSVP’d to the Facebook event “Storm
Area 51, They Can’t Stop All Of Us,” which takes place on
Friday, September 20, 2019. All attendees are required to meet at the
Area 51 Alien Center tourist attraction to coordinate entry into the Nevada base.
For decades, Area 51 has been the source of alien conspiracy theorists,
who believe the secret military base contained unidentified flying objects
(UFOs) and even extraterrestrials. In 2013, the U.S. military officially
acknowledged the Air Force base as a flight-testing site.
But what would happen if you decide to storm Area 51 on September 20?
A U.S. Air Force spokesperson says that it is dangerous to attempt to illegally
access military bases. Not only are there “No Trespassing”
signs surrounding the area, but military personnel is also authorized
to use deadly force against intruders. However, local authorities are
also prepared to use non-lethal force (e.g. pepper spray and tear gas).
Section 1382 of Title 18 states that
trespassing on military bases is punishable by a federal prison sentence of up to
six months and a maximum $500 fine.
Since Area 51 is significantly far removed from public roadways, the journey
to reach the Air Force Base is an arduous challenge.
In a pinned post on the event page, the event host clearly states that
this plan is a joke—with no intention of actually executing it.
